These are some fun pictures I recently got taken of me in some rather unconventional looking, and engineered tennis shorts I made almost a few years back, with posts writing about them linked in the headers except for the Warhol shorts, which are new to this blog.
In the summer of 2015, Walmart sold some kids’ T-shirts in the design of superhero torsos wherever they covered. They had Spider-man, the Incredible Hulk, and Iron-Man. From these, I got the idea to make complementary shorts to have summer cosplay inspired fashion. I wore them for general summer casual wear, but mostly in which to play tennis. Yup, you got that right. People at my tennis club showed up in mostly white or whatever, and on the other side was a guy in what looked like a summer version of superhero cosplay, using playing in the style of the character. 🙂
The complementary shorts Spider-man were easy. They were just blue, as seen in my MORALES shorts post. The Hulk’s complementary shorts weren’t much harder. I just had to find fabric that could look ripped at the bottom, but wouldn’t fray like crazy on me. I actually had purple spandex in my stash so the HULK shorts resulted. Iron-man, though, was another matter! I was going to have to make shorts that looked like the suit, or at least close enough that they looked like they belonged together with the shirt! After a little scheming, I did!
Anybody wanna cosplay tennis with me?
That’s what I’ve been asking people ever since I came up with an idea for tennis wear version of cosplays when I saw some “abs” T-shirts at Walmart, like this one of the Incredible Hulk’s upper body. When I saw those short sleeve T-shirts that obviously can’t be part of a cosplay since they don’t cover the entire arm, I immediately thought of making shorts that would function in the same way. That is, they’d be the truncated lower body portion of the cosplay, and should be suitable to wear to play tennis that I would wear them to.
Last summer, a lady at St George’s tennis club gave me an old brown T-shirt with the Bjorn Borg kneeling victory celebration silhouette in white logo (see pic). I guess she thought I could fit it but it was too big for me, so I got this idea to use that logo and fabric in a pair of tennis shorts highlighting that logo. They’re be like long beach or basketball shorts except I’d use them for tennis given that Bjorn Borg tennis player logo. Like my trademark tennis shorts, they’d also only have one pocket opposite my serving side to hold balls, since the serving arm always has the racquet in hand.
Up till recently, I had been making tennis shorts long like beach shorts. That’s partly because of the deep pocket required to hold a tennis ball in my pocket at times when I play, and because it’s more the current style. However, seeing all the ladies at my tennis club in their uber short tennis skirts, showing off their legs, I got jealous and decided to make my tennis shorts shorter. I had nice legs, too!
