IRON-MAN Tennis Shorts

In the summer of 2015, Walmart sold some kids’ T-shirts in the design of superhero torsos wherever they covered. They had Spider-man, the Incredible Hulk, and Iron-Man. From these, I got the idea to make complementary shorts to have summer cosplay inspired fashion. I wore them for general summer casual wear, but mostly in which to play tennis. Yup, you got that right. People at my tennis club showed up in mostly white or whatever, and on the other side was a guy in what looked like a summer version of superhero cosplay, using playing in the style of the character. 🙂

The complementary shorts Spider-man were easy. They were just blue, as seen in my MORALES shorts post. The Hulk’s complementary shorts weren’t much harder. I just had to find fabric that could look ripped at the bottom, but wouldn’t fray like crazy on me. I actually had purple spandex in my stash so the HULK shorts resulted. Iron-man, though, was another matter! I was going to have to make shorts that looked like the suit, or at least close enough that they looked like they belonged together with the shirt! After a little scheming, I did!

The LOUD Racquet Cover (Prototype)

LOUD racquet cover

LOUD racquet cover

It’s been a while since I’d done a fashion garment or accessories post so I want to let you all know that I name all the things I sew as a way to quickly reference them. Here, I have a tennis racquet cover and so to play on, both, a verbal and written pun of racket and racquet, I am calling this accessory LOUD. I am also putting a double meaning in LOUD for the visually “loud” design these racquet covers will be since I can choose any fabric I want in making them.

Quite the clever and funny name, I thought! 🙂

A Fashion and Sewing Blog within this Blog

Between 2013-2015, sewing and fashion design was a big part of my free time. It is again and will continue for the foreseeable future. As part of this move and in anticipation of more articles on sewing and fashion, I have organized the 110 articles on said topics that are this blog into a number of categories listed below. You will also be able to find them on the My Fashion page, or under the menu at the top under My Art, or in the Categories menu at bottom left, if you want to see the articles together in some sense.

DIY Tapering Wide Bra Strap to Reduce Shoulder Gouging

I just replaced the bra straps on a bra to make it wide on the top of the shoulders, where thin straps can gouge into the shoulders. The wider straps distributes the bust weight load over a wider surface area to ease the pressure, but tapers to the same points of connection as the thinner original straps so the wearer wouldn’t feel like they’re wearing big suspender straps that aren’t exactly feminine. The straps are double layered and serged for strength, turned inside out, but thin enough still that a regular non-white blouse or thicker top should cover it just as well as a regular strap. The taper is also asymmetric so the edge towards the neck runs further off centre, allowing for a slightly longer edge that may be needed for a rising shoulder to neck.

So here’s my question. Why don’t bra makers do this?

BOLERO Hoodie

I’ve been meaning to learn how to do a few things for my garment construction development. One was to get a pattern and sew a hood. The other was to put grommets into garments for lacing on my own, as opposed to doing it with a vice like industrial strength tool. So what did I come up with for a project? A hoodie and bolero jacket combination for women.
