Definition: Compluvium, Impluvium, Revetment

Compluvium

Square opening in roof of ancient Roman atrium, toward which the roof sloped and through which the rain fell into the impluvium

 

Impluvium

Sunken part of the atrium in a Greek or Roman house, designed to carry away rainwater coming through the compluvium of the roof

 

Revetment

A façade of stone slabs or decorated ceramic plaques used as the outer facing layer of a wall, esp in Roman architecture
