Social Media Without the Dopamine

I have a finsta. If you didn’t know what that is, like WordPress’ spellcheck didn’t, it’s a fake or secret Instagram account, of which secret applies to mine.

It’s also a zinsta. If you didn’t know what that is, like WordPress’ spellcheck didn’t, and everybody else didn’t, it’s an Instagram account with zero followers, and is following nobody. Zilch. And still zilch after 100 posts as of today.

If your life story were a jigsaw puzzle, what would it look like?

I wrote a short poem in tanka format about a week ago. In it, I pondered if my life story were a jigsaw puzzle, what would it look like? Now, and what I hope it would look like at the end.

Today, I finally did that “mental exercise” that could also be good for a writing exercise. My answer is below, but if you want to try it yourself, I would suggest you not read further until after you have tried it yourself, so as not to be influenced by ideas. 🙂

I enjoyed the exercise, and I hope you will, too, if you decide to give it a try.

The poem will be on my poetry blog on November 2nd. I have a large back log of short poems so I am sharing one or two per day in chronological sequence among sequences of poems in common collections.

The Sign (a short story contest submission)

In 2015, I entered all the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) literary prize contests as part of my effort to get writing back into my life. I didn’t win anything, but that’s OK. The competition was immense for both quality and quantity. This is my entry for the Short Story contest (link to winners), which is now over and I can share my entry. It’s my first ever science-fiction story. I hope you’ll enjoy it. 🙂

The Pho Incident (A Story from my Childhood)

This past winter, I entered the CBC Literary Awards competition for Creative Nonfiction. In short, it’s a contest for style of how you tell a real story in 1500 words or less. The Long List was recently announced and I wasn’t on it, which meant I can now share it here with you! Entries published anywhere until now would have been disqualified from the competition.

This event had an impact on something in my near future at the time of writing, on which I contemplated and which has since passed. In a few days, I will post the follow-up to my contemplation at the story’s end.

I hope you’ll like it and thanks for reading. 🙂

Robert Zimmerman Jr Seems to Want His Brother George’s Title as Most Hated Man in America

The George Zimmerman verdict was delivered as not guilty, and what do I see? His brother Robert Jr. running around talking trash about how Trayvon had plans for George for the night and it was too bad it didn’t work out. Then he tries to hammer it home the jury agreed, as if they weren’t bound by that stupid stand your ground law that allows someone like George to pursue, but then shoot someone when they find out they bit off more than they could chew!
