The Non-Christian Gambit

In April 2021, I submitted five entries to a postcard story (500 words or less) writing contest by Geist magazine. Of these, two used the same postcard image shown at right, with the other story being the previous post. They were both inspired by stories in David Eagleman’s delightful short story collection about the afterlife called Sum. One of my entries got short-listed, but not this one. Still, I enjoyed the thinking and writing process, and wanted to share it with you. I hope you’ll like it.

Torn Souls

In April 2021, I submitted five entries to a postcard story (500 words or less) writing contest by Geist magazine. It didn’t cost much so I put a batch in of whatever I got done by the deadline. This one was inspired by stories in David Eagleman’s delightful short story collection about the afterlife called Sum. One of my five entries got short-listed, but not this one. Still, I enjoyed the thinking and writing process, and wanted to share it with you. The picture is the image of the postcard I chose to go with the postcard story. I hope you’ll like it.

Watson and I

Image for Watson and I postcard story

Almost a year ago this month, I wrote my first “postcard stories” (500 words or fewer), for a contest by Geist magazine. I had submitted five entries, but could only show the pictures of the “postcards” I had chosen with my entries since I couldn’t publish the entries and still be eligible for judging. A year later, I found out I didn’t place first to third, but did get one postcard story short listed! A thrill for me being a new writer and someone who is consistently told he couldn’t write succinctly! Maybe not if I didn’t work hard at it, but I definitely can! Here is that postcard story, with the others to come soon. I hope you like it! Give it a chance. It’s only 500 words… including the title! 🙂

Writing Postcard Stories

https://digitalcitizen.ca/category/writing/Up to this month, I had never written any really short stories, like 500 words or fewer. I had also written very little fiction. However, with a postcard story contest I found out about from Vancouver Canada, I have “all of a sudden” (relatively to my life timeline), written five! I can’t share them yet, and may not be able to until fall, unless they get eliminated really early, but here were the postcards I chose.

Two Greats’ Birthdays

https://digitalcitizen.ca/category/writing/January 26th is Wayne Gretzky’s birthday. Happy birthday, Wayne! If my memory were correct, it’s a big birthday year for you, 2021. Arguably, the greatest hockey player of all time, you are, not arguably, my favourite hockey player of all time. Yet, on your birthday, while I’m happy for you, I’m always a little wistful for me from a little chance incident back in my childhood as a nine year old refugee in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
