Wish on My Star by Jake Shimabukuro and Jennifer Perri

I heard a great new song today I wanted to share because I’m not sure it’s been heard that often outside some parts of the world like Japan, Hawaii and among ukulele lovers. The song is Wish on My Star, by ukulele god Jake Shimabukuro, featuring Jennifer Perri on vocals. It was on Jake’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps CD (video of his amazing rendition) and featured in the movie Hula GirlsΒ that was big in Japan and Hawaii. However, other indications like relative lack of YouTube videos and views on them seem to suggest it hasn’t been heard much. That’s why I’m writing a post to share.

I love the song that much already that I would replace a song in my Top 30 Love Songs, which I did as a Facebook meme in February, to make place for it! Enjoy!

Dear Mr Dylan

Dear Mr Dylan,

You are the greatest songwriter in the world. I love your songs like I love nobody else’s song… even when I can’t make out what you’re saying in them. That’s because I know when I Google them, I will be profounded by what you were trying to sing. However, while learning to play your songs, I discovered didn’t feel quite right, so I made a few changes and I’d like to share them with you.

Guitar and Ukulele Tabs for Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan (with extra lyrics)

Bob Dylan

There are two printable sets of guitar and ukulele tab PDFs for this song: one with Bob Dylan’s lyrics and one with his andΒ mine.

On Bob Dylan’s site, Knockin’ on Heaven’s DoorΒ only has two verses of lyrics. Those would be verses 1 and 3 in my arrangement.

When he performed it on MTV Unplugged in 1995, though, he put in an additional verse that is verse 2 in this arrangement… because it best fits between the original two verses, in my opinion.

Got Something to Say

This song started out in version 1 as a rowdy and ruckus song about my opinionated self, for all the opinionated people out there. However, something happened on the way to finishing it over about 4.5 years and 5 versions. I got reflective and basically doubled the length of the song while halving its tempo to end up with a hippie sing-along that might well be good for kindergarten to teach children some good behaviour in life. πŸ™‚

The song started down Positively 4th Street and ended up Where Have All the Flowers Gone, to put it bluntly.
