TARTAN Toque and Scotia Mittens Doubled Layered Fleece Set

tartan-toque-and-scotia-mittensThis matching set of double layered fleece toque and mittens is based on the Nova Scotia (NS) tartan. Not being Scottish but living in Nova Scotia, I can only claim the NS tartan as my own to wear. Fortunately for me, it’s not only easy to find compared to any other clan or province’s tartan out there, it’s also my favourite tartan! With patriotic garments always popular with many, it was only a matter of time before I’d get myself a set of these tartan toque and mittens. I figured I shouldn’t wait so here they are!

PUZZLE Toque and JIGSAW Mittens Double Layered Fleece Set

puzzle-toque-and-jigsaw-mittensI’ve been making double fleece toque and mittens winter sets to revamp some of my winter wardrobe. I have a horrible collection of mismatched toques, gloves and mittens that don’t often even fit well, so I was in desperate need of some of these garments. I’ve decided I would make 5 sets with different feel and impressions for various times and events, as well as variety and fun. This is the first set I’m showing.

MAPLE Mittens and CANADIAN Winter Gift Set

canadiana-gift-setI recently devised my own way to make double layered mittens where all the seams are on the inside after inversion. The double layer also allowed one for show on the outside, like with spandex of many funky patterns, and one for warmth on the inside like with generic fleece, or both of fleece for warmth. I did the latter and added a matching double layered tuque I also devised my own way of doing with similar principles, to make a “Canadian” winter gift set for a friend who happens to have the same head and hand size as me. Very convenient!

Silver LIZARD Skin Fleece and Spandex Gloves

lizard-gloves-closed

Recently, I taught myself how to create a simple glove pattern that could turned into a double layered glove easily. I’ll blog more on that when I have the process documented better. The double layer glove means you can do a few things with it:

  • Use the two layers together for warmth, excess warmth if you use two warming layers like both of fleece.
  • Use the outer layer for design for whatever you have that you can use on the outside, like crazy spandex or stretch material (non-stretch possible but not recommended for excess stress on seams).

Here, I used some silver snake / lizard / crocodile / alligator skin spandex I had purchased in Manhattan some years ago and the result is pretty cool, in my opinion. Under a coat sleeve, it looks like I have silver lizard skin! Combined with the GATORSNAKE running tights made a few years ago from the same spandex, and a tuque to come, I might well be a vampire hunting, silver skinned lizard of a runner this winter!

1701 Tuque (double layered fleece)

1701 Tuque

1701 Tuque

This was the third tuque I made from my recently designed and fitted one piece double layered tuque pattern shown below. The ability to put something larger than a panel on the tuque is why you’d want to really use this pattern, as well as better durability, compared to the multiple panel patterns you usually find out there. Here, I grabbed some portraits of The Original Series Star Trek Enterprise crew from a cotton print, and appliquéd them onto the flat fleece before sewing together to form a shaped tuque.
