If you sew or have an interest in fabrics, you probably want to visit the Fashion/Garment District in Manhattan while you’re in New York to see and maybe buy some great fabrics. If you live in a smaller city, you would definitely want to do this because the selection is incredible. I had already reviewed some fabric shops, but what I want to focus on here is notions and accessories for your sewing that you should also check out while in New York. This is the more interesting stuff to get, as far as I’m concerned, because you’re likely to be able to find more diversity from what you have access to in notions and accessories, comparied fabrics, in your area.

TED Ads Worth Spreading 2011, Part 3 of 3
This is the final part of 3 posts showing all the ads TED deemed worth spreading. Please click on the links for Part 1 and Part 2.
The TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) community just released its 2011 Ads Worth Spreading contest winners, and the ads are better than the ones I have seen for the Super Bowl in any year! But what did you expect from a brilliant group who’s moniker is “Ideas Worth Spreading”?
These ads aren’t like those in the Super Bowl where they last 30-60 seconds. They tend to be much longer, often the full version of the ad rather than the truncated TV time version. However, with ads like these, I could watch commercials in place of TV shows because I don’t notice how long or short the ads were. I’m actually a little sad once it’s over, alongside whatever mood the commercials left me in.
I have posted the ads here because I have found higher quality versions of the ads than the ones available on the TED website. Otherwise, I’d have just linked to them all on TED’s site.

The Cove, Japan’s Dirty Dolphin Killing Secret (entire documentary)
Each September to February, a nasty dolphin hunt takes place off the coast of Japan in a little village called Taiji (tai-jee), where most of the 20,000 dolphins and porpoises killed off Japan are done annually. The Cove, winner of multiple international film festival awards including Oscar for Best Documentary in 2009, exposes what goes on in Taiji and how Japan manipulates little bankrupt countries to support its whaling cause and empire through the International Whaling Commission (IWC). Courageous to film undercover, inspiring and shocking to watch, this film is having some effect on public awareness of the issues, from brutal senseless killings to mercury poisoning in the food and fraud by selling worthless dolphin meat as expensive whale meat. You might also learn a thing about being coy and manipulative in empire building, as well as dedication and heart in pursuit of a cause through Ric O’Barry and others’ efforts to expose this annual massacre.
Despite all the public praise and awareness this film has been getting, the issues raised could always use a little more attention because they’re still killing dolphins in Taiji as I write in October. Well, this little site of mine gets some decent attention, so here is the movie in case you haven’t seen it. Thanks to whoever uploaded the entire thing on Tudou in high quality, and even added English and Japanese subtitles, where it needs to be known!

Friends’ Name Alphabet Facebook Picture Tagging Game
I did not create the idea for this Facebook picture tagging meme game, nor did I create the pictures for them below. However, I did look for them, touched them up and adopted them for this game because the ones I saw were bad or inadequate (i.e. missing letters in the alphabet).
The idea is to tag one of your friends who have first names starting with each letter of the alphabet, for as many letters as you can. You can tag people who don’t have Facebook accounts as well because you can just type in a name when you tag a picture instead of choosing from someone on your list.
Aside from just a quick survey for yourself, for those of you who are social butterfly types, challenge your friends to see who has more. If that’s too easy, see who find friends with first names starting with every letter of the alphabet. I do not recommend this because true friends should be based on something more than just for filling out a Facebook tagging meme, and I do not recommend getting Facebook or other social media network friends who you don’t know just for the sake of this. There are real life dangers and risks with these activities. However, if you are among a lot of people in big institutions there there’s a realistic chance there might be a Zack or Xavier walking around, it might be fun to try!
