Why the Toronto Maple Leafs did NOT Draft in 1965?

Really, who cares? Right? I wonder how many Maple Leafs fan even know the Leafs didn’t draft in 1965… let alone why?

I didn’t know, though there was no reason I should have known. I like NHL hockey but not THAT much to know such trivia. I wouldn’t have cared, either, except that in doing my first post for a Athletic Analytics, a sports analytics blog I’m starting with JavaScript visuals I can’t embed here, I saw an anomaly in the visual. Curiosity then got the better of me.

In the first post about the number of drafts in which NHL teams participated, I saw that the Toronto Maple Leafs had one fewer year of participation than the other five Original Six teams. I’m not a hockey historian but I know the Leafs had been around long before 1963 when the drafts started, so what was going on?

MAPLE Mittens and CANADIAN Winter Gift Set

canadiana-gift-setI recently devised my own way to make double layered mittens where all the seams are on the inside after inversion. The double layer also allowed one for show on the outside, like with spandex of many funky patterns, and one for warmth on the inside like with generic fleece, or both of fleece for warmth. I did the latter and added a matching double layered tuque I also devised my own way of doing with similar principles, to make a “Canadian” winter gift set for a friend who happens to have the same head and hand size as me. Very convenient!

Leafs Lose in Time to Let Canadians See Chris Hadfield Land

I have new respect for the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Instead of trying to win Game 7 of their playoffs against the Boston Bruins in over time, they gave up the winning goal in time so the game could be off the air just time in for Canadians to see their beloved astronaut, Chris Hadfield, land in his return from the International Space Station.

The Leafs, clearly, put the interests of Canadians above theirs, knowing not all Canadians are Leaf fans… but that all Canadians, are Chris Hadfield fans. 🙂

Chris is a Leafs fan, though. He won’t be happy to hear that upon coming back to Earth. However, he should be consoled and touched by the fact the Leafs lost for him.

Thanks, Leafs! Enjoy your summer. You’ll get the karma back in your golf games.

NHL, AHL, WHL, OHL, QMJHL, NWHL Hockey Fans Facebook Friends Tagging Challenge

I created these tagging challenges for fans of North American hockey, or people who know lots of those fans. The tagging challenges can be done on Facebook, MySpace, LiveJournal or other platforms where you can tag people on pictures.

The idea is to see how diverse is the group of hockey fans you know, and how does that compare to your fellow hockey loving friends. It’s no fun if everybody supported the team you supported, you know!

Pick a Facebook tagging meme of your choice based on the leagues below:

Tag one person you know whose favourite team is represented by the team logo. It has to be that person’s favourite team as you can’t tag a person twice on the same photo.

How many teams can you tag? And how does this compare to your friends who might have done this same challenge?

Here’s how to get these graphics for your tagging fun:

  • Click on a picture below to get it at full size.
  • Right click on that picture and save to your computer.
  • Upload it to your Facebook profile.
  • Tag your friends!

Fancy yourself quite the social sports fan, or this isn’t your sport? Try the same Facebook tagging challenges for:
