Compluvium

Square opening in roof of ancient Roman atrium, toward which the roof sloped and through which the rain fell into the impluvium

 

Impluvium

Sunken part of the atrium in a Greek or Roman house, designed to carry away rainwater coming through the compluvium of the roof

 

Revetment

A façade of stone slabs or decorated ceramic plaques used as the outer facing layer of a wall, esp in Roman architecture

Privation

A state in which things that are essential for human well-being such as food and warmth are scarce or lacking.

 

Agape

Greco-Christian term referring to the highest form of love (for man, God, charity), unconditional love

 

Storge

Familial love that is natural or instinctual affection, as love of a parent towards offspring and vice versa

Oculus

A round or eye-like opening or design

 

Perfect number

A whole number whose summed factors equal it (6,28,496,8128)

 

Rotunda

Any building with a circular ground plan, and sometimes covered by a dome

 

Scoria

A low-density, lightweight volcanic rock

 

Groundmass

The compact, finer-grained material in which the crystals are embedded in a porphyritic rock (groundmass also called matrix)

 

Aphanitic

Fine grained

 

Porphyry

An igneous rock consisting of large-grained crystals such as feldspar or quartz dispersed in a fine-grained silicate rich, generally aphanitic matrix or groundmass
