Rostral column

Is a type of victory column, originating in ancient Greece and Rome where they were erected to commemorate a naval military victory

 

Apotheosis

The highest point in the development of something

 

Showbread

Cakes or loaves of bread which were always present on a specially dedicated table (showbread table)

 

Pontificate

The office or tenure of pope or bishop

Pelta

A small shield used in art or decoration, especially elliptical or crescent-shaped

 

Aspergillum

An implement for sprinkling holy water (ball or brush on end of stick)

 

Augur

Curved wand of a religious official

 

Flamen

Priest of the ancient Roman religion who was assigned to one of fifteen deities with official cults during the Roman Republic

One of those articles where I knew very little about what it was talking about so I ended up learning a slew of words.

 

Architrave

(in classical architecture) a main beam resting across the tops of columns, specifically the lower third entablature

 

Pronaos

A vestibule at the front of a classical temple, enclosed by a portico and projecting sidewalls

 

Vestibule

An antechamber, hall, or lobby next to the outer door of a building

 

Antechamber

A small room leading to a main one

 

Ovolo

A rounded convex molding, in cross section a quarter of a circle or ellipse

 

Egg-and-dart

An ornamental device adorning the fundamental quarter-round, convex ovolo profile of moulding, consisting of alternating details on the face of the ovolo (aka egg-and-tongue, egg and anchor, or egg and star)
