Convinced I was only one draft away from the shell pattern from which I would create many of my dress shirts, I went for it on this draft as if I had the final pattern. In case I was wrong, and I have been several times on this adventure already, I just did a design without yokes, appliques or other detailing. Never one to miss an opportunity, though, I picked out the only toile that I had to create a design where I had to line up a picture across the front seam. I also did it on the left body seam, being my weaker arm that doesn’t move as much as my right that exposes the lined up right seam. I couldn’t line up all seams, though since that would have required the pattern repetition to be ideal for my upper body pattern circumference.

The ILLUSION Dress Shirt
This is what became of the dress shirt I cannibalized, about which I wrote the last week. It was one of my funner design dress shirts rather one of the more regal looking ones you’ll see after this, but I still like it a lot.
The MISSIE Dress
I belong to the Atlantic Sewing Guild. Last year, they had a mentoring program where members were matched between mentor and student pending on who wanted to learn certain things, and who could and would be willing to teach it. One thing I knew I needed to learn was how to bust fit garments for women. I didn’t want to be limited to making dresses only of pattern sizing, or be helpless when even that doesn’t work well. Mary Baxter of the Guild was very kind to step up to teach me and here is the result!
Grading System for My Fashion
Recently, I completed a series of posts on the ten elements of my fashion philosophy, which I will use to guide myself in designing and making garments. That doesn’t mean I’ll try for all of them all the time, but it’s a useful guide.
As a professional analyst in my day (and only real) job, guides are useful to some extent if left as that. However, they’re better when there are indicators of success and/or progress. That’s why I’ve created a simple self-grading system to score each of these ten elements in a garment out of 10 for a “percentage” score out of 100.
