A popular quote in the English language is live each day like it were your last. While meaning to be inspirational and stir passion, it’s about as impractical, arguably stupid, as advice you can give someone.

Do a simple thought experiment. Really, if tomorrow (to give you a full day) were the last day of your life, what would you do? Try to get all the details so that it’s not a concept, but a reality that you would really know what you’d be doing.

Would you show up for work? Would you be cooking meals? Getting groceries? Running other errands? Cleaning house? Paying bills?

Maybe you’d have a great meal and get drunk. Maybe you’d call up people to tell them how much they meant to you. Maybe you’d do something crazy you’ve always wanted to do for life.

Truth is if you lived every day like it were your last, you probably wouldn’t do much that’s sustainable. You might soon run out of money, maybe kicked out of your living arrangement for being irresponsible, take risks that might really hurt or kill you, etc.

Seriously, if most people do what that advice to live each day like it were your last intends them to do, soon, it will be there last day alive.
