My Trip to Spandex World in Manhattan

Recently, I was in Manhattan and took the opportunity to visit the Spandex World store on West 38th, between 7th and 8th Avenue in the Fashion/Garment District, that specialized in spandex. Here was my experience for when you go visit them, or in case you want to check them out and order from them online.

What Would Be Your “Metta World Peace” Name?

Ron Artest, the basketball player currently known as Metta World Peace, changed his name in a tone of hypocrisy to try to cover up his violent past on and off the basketball court. He has been in brawls, is a repeat offender for dishing out nasty flagrant fouls, suspended for about 100 games and arrested on domestic violence. To call yourself Metta (Buddhist term meaning loving kindness and friendliness toward others) and sporting World Peace on your back doesn’t change who you are, even if it’s as powerful an advertisement as can be for a celebrity because your name gets called an awful lot! But if the world did see him in a new light because of his name, World Peace recently reminded us it’s all a facade with a six game suspension for almost taking the jaw off James Harden with an elbow.

But Ron does go around sporting World Peace on the back of his jersey, which prompts me to ask you this…

Congratulations to Japanese Women for Winning Soccer World Cup Finals 2011

Congratulations to the Japanese women soccer team for winning the 2011 FIFA World Cup in soccer!

They fought courageously, coming back from a goal down twice reasonably late in the game to tie it 2-2 in extra time. Then they won it decisively on in penalty kicks, not needing to finish the set to win it 3-1, becoming the first Asian soccer World Cup champions. Absolutely true to their underdog label to the very end!

The US may have seemed to have dominated play, with 27 shots to a dozen or so by the Japanese. However, it was all an illusion. The Japanese had more shots on goal than the US, at 6-5. The Japanese also had the ball 53% of the time.

The US was the flashier team, but the Japanese was the more consistent team.

Mikael Granlund’s “Lacrosse” Style Scoop Hockey Goal Video

Mikael Granlund, a 19 year old hockey player from Finland drafted 9th overall last year by the Minnesota Wild, just scored what may well be the play of the year on Friday the 13th of May, 2011!

On the IIHF World Championship semi-final stage against the Russians, at full speed stealing the puck in the corner, then walking around a player, then having that player chase him behind the net, Mikael scoops up the puck and puts it up and under the crossbar. He scored “lacrosse style”, as some like to say, to give Finland a 1-0 lead. But never mind my description. Have a look for yourself because words don’t do this goal justice!

When South Viet Nam Fell, Its People Rose to Be More

On April 30th, 1975, South Viet Nam fell as the Viet Nam War ended. Thirty-six years on as I write this, though, its people have risen mightily to become more than they could have ever been if left to develop in Viet Nam had the War ended differently.
