The crimson, white and powder blue colours on this dress shirt were inspired by those of the English football club, Aston Villa. However, let me be clear from the very start there is no association of this shirt design, myself or anything related with the Aston Villa football club. It was just the colour scheme that inspired me so I named my shirt appropriate to give credit where it’s due. I’m a Manchester United fan. 🙂
Ah, men’s dress pants. What can be done with them for design without getting disapproving looks for “unprofessionalism”? Not much, really. Even a stripe down the side or something makes them athletic and too casual. Flashy colours makes you look like you’re going dancing, even if it’s a hip look. Colour block you look like you’re going out dancing or for a fashion show. Even jacquard style tone on tone is regarded as being a bit much by some. So what can one do?
Each summer in recent years, I have participated in parades with Hal-Con, Halifax’s sci-fi,fantasy & gaming convention run completely by much-too-dedicated volunteers. One of these parades is our Pride Parade, and I always come up with some special edition cosplay for it.
A few years back, I got the idea for a pink Star Trek: The Next Generation uniform, with each pip representing a colour in the rainbow flag. I made the buttons large so it would be visible from a little far away, given this was a parade and not intimate convention settings where people are constantly close to you to see the details. I did it despite not having a neck big enough fo hold them all on the front right side. And while six pips is more than the Star Trek rank and file would allow, I believe, let me make it clear the six was not meant as superiority. I just couldn’t go around choosing 4 of the 6 colours on the flag, ya know???
My idea wasn’t executed in the best of fashion a few years back, but I got a better version this time around. Fortunately for me, a professional photographer name Shaun Simpson in Halifax was able to get a couple of great shots of it. Even more fortunately, I didn’t look bad in the photos, either. Thanks so much, Shaun! Check out the fabulous entire album Shaun got of the Pride Parade and associated events to see how fun things were this year!
I should find out how I can get this to George Takei so he can see it. I wonder if he would approve. 🙂
