Because: A Song I Heard for the First Time Today

Just sharing an old song I heard for the first time today from the Valerian trailer below, called Because, originally written by John Lennon, with the cover version by Elliot Smith used in the trailer. The original Beatles and Elliot Smith full versions of the song are also below.

Guitar and Ukulele Tabs for Here Comes the Sun (George Harrison)

This Beatles classic was written by George Harrison and has been used by him so much it seems wrong now to say the song was by the Beatles rather than George. The song is tabbed pretty much as is in the recording people know best, which is the one used in the video below.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

George Harrison

The one thing my tabs call for, though, is that the singer also sings all the main instrumental phrasings. You can hum it, if you like, but I prefer to use “doo doo”. It makes for a song with a lot of “doo doo” in it, but a good one! 🙂

All the notes are written out so wherever you see notes in the main body of the lyrics, you sing or hum them.

There is a bit of syncopated strumming in the middle instrumental interlude. “Slash” characters describe them. Read them left to right so if they rise, you’re on an upstroke, whereas if they fall, you’re on a down stroke. It’d be hard to describe it more without a video to show it, which I may some day, but I think if you listen to the song and try to strum along, you’ll get it. It’s not that difficult.

If you do the strumming and singing of the instrumental parts on top of the regular song, you’ll find you won’t feel like you need a band to play a pretty good version of this great tune. The depth of talent in the Beatles still blows my mind!

Enjoy!

If the letter size tabs (8.5″ x 11″) are too small for your eyes, you can either enlarge to tabloid size (11″ x 17″) using an automatic enlarge feature on many photocopiers, or download the tabloid sized versions for printing. The tabloid size tabs can be inserted into a typical letter sized binder on the 11″ size, and folded almost in half to fit. You just open each tab to use it.

I’ve Got a VEGAN-FRIENDLY Guitar Strap???

Planet Waves Beatles Vegan Friend Guitar Strap

I’m just too eco-conscious these days, to the point I’m eco-subconscious!

I just bought one of those Planet Waves Meet the Beatles guitar straps (in photo) on the weekend. I bought it because it felt nice, being synthetic leather (which I could tell was synthetic), it was stylish and it was really cheap. I don’t know why it was really cheap ($8 Cdn new when it should be at least $30 US), but I suspect it might have something to do with the potential coating on it interfering with lacquer finishes on vintage guitars (Vegetarian Star, July 24 2009). Naturally, it can be expected to be a problem worth noting because vintage guitars are expensive, but many of their players might also be of the generation who might buy one of these Beatles guitar straps.

I only found out about the potential problem while looking up more information about the authorization to create these things. The Vegetarian Star article linked above showed up on my search as Planet Waves Unveils Vegan Friendly Beatles Guitar Straps, Picks. That was too good to pass up for a second look, and that was how I found out my new strap was vegan-friendly at Sir vegetarian Paul McCartney’s insistence no real hide be used.

OK. I get the hide thing. I’m not into leather, either. I wouldn’t have bought this strap if it were real leather.

But vegan friendly???

Were they thinking they’d sell these things to environmentally conscious and ethical starving artists who might have to resort to eating their guitar straps to survive? And who would have no guilt about doing it?

Now that’d make an interesting photo for an ad!

Heh, that’s what I get for being cheap. I love the Beatles, though not as much as Bob. Dylan, of course. And I am loving my new guitar strap. I’ll keep the vegan thing in mind in case I have to eat it while out on the road. Not because I’m poor, but because as a marathon runner, I need to eat a lot, all the time, and eat healthy stuff, too! The vegan friendly strap might just be the only available to me at some point.

Now, should I eat it, who’s head should I bite off first? Hahahaha!

Watch Canadian PM Stephen Harper Sing “With a Little Help from My Friends” with Yo-Yo Ma

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has finally found a better use for his mouth than for politics!

In a surprise moment at the National Arts Centre Gala in Ottawa last night (Oct 3), Stephen Harper appeared on stage to sing the Beatles classic With a Little Help from my Friends with Yo-Yo Ma… and he wasn’t bad. That’s a lot more than I can say about him in politics!

[I’ll try to find a better quality full video for this soon]

While Stevo Beatle sat in a Franz Liszt pianist concert posture side on to the audience, the filming was from an angle that hid his hands, defeating the objective of the Liszt seating arrangement. His piano playing might have been as shady as his politics, for all we know, and was definitely all behind the scenes.

However, I was all right with his singing so he’s got a future after politics that’s going to end soon. He’s relied on a little help from his friends and some Canadian apathy to stay in power so far, but his friends are dwindling. He’ll need a little more than that to stay in power long cause we’re becoming a lot less apathetic about his pathetic performance so far.

I’ll give Stevo this, though. That performance in Ottawa was the first thing Stevo’s done that I’ve tolerated to any extent. As for Yo-Yo Ma, well, let’s just say I’m trying really hard not to judge him by the company he keeps.

And that part of the song where Stevo Beatle sings “I need somebody to love”, that’s going to be priceless for the post-election celebrations when he goes down in the next election. 🙂

Finally, isn’t it ironic of all the people Stevo could perform with, he chooses a guy named Yo-Yo? Given all of Stevo’s unfulfilled promises, retracting on so many campaign promises, Yo-Yo is a name Stevo might consider for himself.

Yo-Yo Harper. One who harps but goes back and forth on it. Kind has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

Credit to my friend Liz Shouldice for the video alert.
