In September 2012, Lynden Dorval, a physics teacher in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was fired for giving students a mark of zero for work that wasn’t handed in or tests not taken (CBC). It went against the school’s policy of not giving students zeroes, apparently, at Ross Sheppard High (and I’m sure at some other schools around the world).
Well, talk about STUPID school policies!
On Monday night, the NFL replacement officials made a terrible call that robbed the Green Bay Packers of a victory, and gave the Seattle Seahawks one, on the final play of the game. Watch the video through the link and judge for yourself, if you have not seen it. The NFL has tried to support this decision, but I doubt anybody but Seattle fans and their team are buying it.
Back in June, 2010, American League umpire Jim Joyce made a wrong call on the final out of a Indians – Tigers game that robbed Detroit pitcher Armando Galarraga of a perfect game. To be fair, Jim Joyce publicly apologized, but he should have pushed major league baseball to reverse the ruling given it had no external impact like game outcome or playoff race, or different outcome the way it was allowed to play out.
Both of these were potentially game ending rulings if done right. That is, what came after would not have mattered. There were no “what ifs” had the rulings been changed, like a mid-game ruling where there were lots to still play for and anything might still have happened.
So why can’t they be reversed and the correct results be placed in the record books?
A few months ago, I first heard of 3D printers that were “affordable”. That is, in the couple of thousand dollar range and that someone I knew had one, a Makerbot Replicator. It has spurred me to learn Rhino 3D to create things to be able to put the printer to use. These are my first renderings, a Klingon logo Christmas ornament I would just spray paint chrome to hang from a tree. I plan to have more complicated renderings, eventually leading to armor costumes, in the next 12 months or so.
First, Lance Armstrong quit the drug fight and basically took his place among the cheaters as far as I’m concerned. He had a bigger ego than any of them, but not all of them combined, apparently.
Now, Neil Armstrong has left Earth for good. I wonder if they’ll scatter his ashes in space or land it on the moon or something?
I will be sad to never hear from Neil again, but there will always be that historic recording I could listen to over and over again.
I would be glad if I could never hear from Lance again, but I’m afraid I’ll still hear him yapping about his supposed innocence over and over again.
Neil was class.

Rest in tease, Lance.
Either way, let’s hope the Armstrongs will have better days ahead!
I have many life philosophies by which I live. By life philosophies, I mean principles and attitudes I really live by, not just nod when I hear them in the form of a good quote or speech. I have never kept record of these life philosophies, but I thought I’d take some time to write some down now to see if I had one for every year I’ve lived. Why one per year lived? Because I’ve long thought that if I could learn something valuable enough from life each year to turn it into a life philosophy, a life outlook and behavioral change for the rest of my life, it’d have been a good year for wisdom.
