PORT HAWKESBURY, NS
Design F1
Mirror of Mulgrave 1
The Canso Strait separates mainland Nova Scotia to the west, and Cape Breton Island to the east. Across the Strait to Port Hawkesbury is the Town of Mulgrave, for which I had proposed some flag designs posted in late October. Of those designs, the C series is a reflection of my C series here because of the similarities between the two ports that were once connected by a ferry before a causeway with rail line was built across the Strait. Unfortunately for Mulgrave, the causeway mostly eliminated the need for the ferry, and Port Hawkesbury became the port of choice with the railway stopping there as the gateway to Cape Breton that Mulgrave could not match for mainland Nova Scotia. The event affected Mulgrave’s economy catastrophically. Mulgrave’s history on its website even ended there! If good relations existed between these two towns, I thought it might be a nice concept to have reflective flags to show, both, similarities, and opposites, each flag in the entity’s branding colours.
In this first “X marks the spot” geographic flag design (Ted Kaye’s term), the strait is blue while the land is green. I’m not crazy about the light blue and green being next to each other, but I wanted the X to really stand out so the dark blue had to be there rather than used for the strait. White is not technically a colour in the Port’s branding scheme, but I thought it added some nice contrast rather than just using the two blues and light green.
