MyDealists – Self-interested Idealists or Greedy Idealists

I hate hypocrisy, and hate isn’t too strong a word here. To say something and do something else is just bad character, to pass yourself off as something you are not.

I hate hypocrisy more when it’s deliberate self-image manipulation, rather than accidental or not well thought out, just reactionary.

However, I hate hypocrisy most when someone is disguising their self-interest, with something clearly to be gained, as idealism for the nobility of the masses, a cause, or something for which they can put themselves on a pedestal. That’s like first degree murder compared to manslaughter or accidental injury.

Why Canada’s Banning of Dire Straits’ Money for Nothing is Bad Policy

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) issued a ruling today which censored Dire Straits’ mega-hit song from over 25 years ago, Money for Nothing. The CBSC said the song should either be banned, or suitably edited, for its use of the homophobic word “faggot”, three times. (CBC, Jan 13 2011; CSBC Decision)

(I’d have embedded the actual music video but those *^&*@$ at YouTube have all these copyrights rules now that don’t let them be seen in Canada and other countries).

I understand the principle to censor the song, but completely disagree with the psychology of the action. For the sake of an ideal, the fight against homophobia just took a step backward rather than a step forward.

Six Word Biographies

Share/Save/Bookmark

Larry Smith and Rachel Fershleiser from Boingboing had this great concept of the 6-word memoir. There are even great YouTube videos about it.

I absolutely loved the idea! Unfortunately, unless you were Maya Angelou, you should probably just stick to one memoir… even if your memoir were only a 6-word memoir. For the record, mine is Everything Done Will Mean More Later.

However, there’s nothing wrong with writing lots of 6-word biographies, so I’m dedicating this post to the concept. That means I will add other 6-word biographies as I think of them, to this same post, mostly of famous people so others can relate, but also the occasional specific person in my life for an inside joke. Real biography links courtesy of Wikipedia.

If you have any 6-word biographies to share, please add them to the comments. Thank you.
