When I first started learning about genetics for 23andMe’s genotyping services, I started on their site where there was some material. One of the articles was on variations, and more specifically, the “speed gene” with the scientific name of ACTN3. Being a multiple marathon runner who knew I was more of the fast twitch muscle variety for short bursts of speed rather than endurance running, I wanted to know if I, indeed, had this gene and was going to check on it among the first things I do, unless it were really hard to find. To be more correct, I wanted to know if I had the correct configuration of this gene. Everybody has this gene. It’s just a matter of which configuration it was in to enable the benefit of physical speed and power.

How I Will Examine my 23andMe Genotyping Results, and How I Will Share Them
From my experience with 23andMe’s genotyping service, when results were ready, I got 254 reports all at once, and they didn’t even include much of the ancestry reports! The reports are listed at the end, and were in groupings of:
- Health risks (120)
- Drug response (24)
- Inherited conditions (50)
- Traits (60)
- 3 special reports needing individual approval among above groupings
- 3 health tools to assess some features about you
Analysis of a Sample Favourite Characters Correlation Survey, Part 1
A few weeks ago, I shared a fun short survey with regards to people’s favourite fictional characters to see if there were demographic trends. It was for me to learn the capabilities of Google Forms, with a survey that would have some meaning to hopefully generate interest for doing something on a larger scale in the future. Most of those who answered would have been associated with Halifax (Nova Scotia) based Facebook groups of geek/nerd interest like Hal-Con (our local “comic-con”), Anime-at-Large and Jules Verne Phantastical Society (JVPS, steampunk), but they were definitely not the only ones. Thanks to all those who did it, and shared it, including Michael McCluskey (aka Fat Apollo).
Obama’s Barackets Finished Ahead of 73.8% of ESPN Brackets
Congratulations to the Louisville Cardinals for winning the March Madness Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament in 2013. For the tournament, I have been updating the performance of President Barack Obama’s Barackets (link at end) among over 8 million ESPN entries. With the tournament now over, I can report a final placing for the President at better than 73.8% of all brackets entered. However, once again, I beat the President, finishing ahead of 90.0% of those same bracket set.

CNN just projected Barack Obama has been re-elected President of the USA in 2012 as I write this! Woohoo!!!
