Van Gogh’s Impasto Up Close

In the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, there are lots of Van Gogh paintings. What was surprising to me, though, was how close you could get to them to be able to see all the details of the impasto in his paintings. Their abstraction, when viewed up close, was often just as interesting as the painting itself. That’s why I took a bunch of such pics and put them into a TikTok video.

Definition: Bucchero, Metalliform, Kyathos, Impasto, Abecedarium, Kantharos, Hydria

Bucchero

A distinctly black, burnished ceramic ware, that is the signature ceramic fabric of the Etruscans (name is not theirs though)

 

Metalliform

Having the form or structure of a metal

 

Kyathos

Single-handled cup from Etruscan times

 

Impasto (not related to paint)

A rough, unrefined clay

 

Kantharos

Two-handled drinking cup from Etruscan times

 

Hydria

Water ware jug from Etruscan times

 

Abecedarium

Letters of the alphabet
