Pinterest Adds “Secret” Boards Feature, But Needs More Privacy Flexibility

Less than a week after I gave in to Pinterest, Pinterest introduced a feature I immediately wanted – secret boards that are limited in visibility to only those you choose. They’re useful for purposes like collecting gift ideas you don’t want friends and others to see, or just stuff you want to keep to yourself and/or select others. Try not to think porn here, eh? Otherwise, secret boards work like this:

  • You can create up to 3 secret boards. If you already have 3 secret boards but want to make a new one, you’ll need to delete one or make one of your current secret boards visible to everyone. If you’re invited to contribute to someone else’s secret board, it won’t count against your 3-board limit.
  • When you add a pin to a secret board, it won’t show up anywhere else on Pinterest—not in the category sections, Popular, Everything, anyone’s search results, your followers’ home feed, your own home feed, or even pins or activity pages on your profile.
  • Your secret boards and pins are at the bottom of your profile. Just scroll down to see them.

Unfortunately, you can’t convert any of your current public boards to a secret status. You can convert secret boards to public, but you can’t then turn them back. It seems Pinterest deems that once something is public, you can’t take it back. I can sort of understand why that might be, but I can’t understand why it can’t be.

Do Geeks and Nerds Prefer Obama or Romney? Poll

There are all kinds of polls for the US election, covering all kinds of demographics. However, I’ve yet to see one for geeks and nerds, as well as dorks and dweebs. Before you chastise me, though, yes, I know the difference between the four.

However, for this post’s sake, and relate to the rest of the public, let’s just all be happy together as geeks and nerds, shall we?

Geeks and nerds may not be taken seriously in life, but as a demographic, they make up about 16% or 1 in 6 of the American population! That’s bigger than a LOT of demographics surveyed out there! Geeks and nerds are definitely a SERIOUS demographic!

So without a poll for this demographic, let me ask all the self-labeled geeks and nerds (and dweebs) out there, who do you prefer for President of the United States? Please vote in the poll below, and share with your geek and nerd friends!

I Prepared for Doomsdaylight Savings Time by Joining Pinterest

After about a half a year’s resistance, I finally joined Pinterest to cut down my clutter and increase my “mobility” to be able to have more “things” at my disposal from more places and to share with more people. This was my answer to what I call Doomsdaylight Savings Time, when we turned back our clocks and get out of work almost in the dark. I don’t do much in the morning aside from getting up and going to work indoors, so my effective daylight exposure is after work. But Doomsdaylight Savings Time removes much of that, including runs in daylight, so I brainstormed for myself something to get excited over to counteract that, and that was Pinterest. Hey, if I’m going to be spending time indoors in the dark, might as well get excited over it!

Share a Disney Star Wars Mash-up

Darth Mickey

The Walt Disney Co. recently bought Lucasfilms from George Lucas for $4.05 billion (Yahoo! as in the site of the article, not my reaction). Some people were thrilled since they’ve been lambasting George Lucas for everything he’s done post the original Star Wars Trilogy. Others thought there was a great disturbance in the force.

We’ll have to see how it’ll all turn out with time, but I can tell you the first good thing that has come of the transaction is the Disney-Star Wars mash-ups immediately found in the Twitterverse (#DisneyStarWars hash tag) and other places.

Some of the best ones I’ve seen are below, but I want to hear more so if you’ve heard of others, or came up with one of your own, please do share by leaving a comment! Continue reading

How Much Would You Pay for Online News from Halifax’s Chronicle-Herald? Poll

Halifax and Nova Scotia’s main newspaper, the Chronicle-Herald, is considering setting up a paywall for access to its online stories. Funny that it was the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) that reported this, not the Herald itself! (Oct 17 2012)

A paywall is a system where surfers would get some stories free, but would have to pay a monthly subscription for most of the other stories. Or you’d get snippets of some or all stories, but would have to pay for the rest of the content. Either way, you’d be having to pay for most of the content. What I want to know in a survey is Continue reading
