Flag Finalist 1 for Mulgrave, NS

MULGRAVE, NS

Finalist 1
Mulgrave Star Geographic

DESCRIPTION
“In Nova Scotia flag colours, on a vertically divided background of 2/3 white on the hoist and 1/3 blue on the fly, an 8 pointed star with the silhouette of a Mi’kmaq star built from four red capital Ms with a yellow interior, designated as the Mulgrave Star, is centered in the white.”

REFERENCES
The flag is geographic with the white representing the mainland of Nova Scotia, where Mulgrave is located with respect to the blue that represents the Strait of Canso to the east of it. The colours are that of the Nova Scotian flag, the province to which Mulgrave belongs, rather than its Town colours that has a challenging gold resembling a dull brown. The Mulgrave Star is a symbol the designer created with the only symbol for Mulgrave being the Scotia Ferry that is challenging to simplify to an easily recognizable form. The eight pointed star is comprised of four capital Ms, each in a cardinal direction and providing two star points, that shares a common silhouette with a Mi’kmaq star that is not a sacred symbol. This Mulgrave star, with its similarly shaped interior, also resembles a plus sign for prosperity, to which the Town aspires.

This is a personal project I have been doing for a year, not an effort by the municipality or its citizens.
