INVERNESS COUNTY, NS
Design D2
Logo on coastline abstraction
The addition of the Inverness County logo to Design D1 makes it more visually interesting, while using branding to make it more appealing to decision makers who would probably want to extend their branding to their flag. While I’m generally against this idea, and arguably should not show designs I don’t think would be good to adopt, where I currently stand on this issue is that I do have to be realistic to use branding in hopes of getting the conversation started about adopting a flag. Once that conversation begins, then I can work on educating the decision makers on the good principles of flag design. Now, if they still won’t change their mind, where I draw the line is with designs I absolutely cannot stand to get adopted if my name were to be attached to it, like usage of lettering (except for lettering aside from one large symmetric letter). If I’m not all that happy about it, like with logos on flags, I am willing to compromise for adoption in the spirit of something not really bad is better than nothing, in contrast nothing would be better than something really bad. In the case of the latter, given it’s not my decision to make, I’d simply get them what they want but would ask my name be left out of the credits.

REFERENCE
Inverness County, Nova Scotia, is one of four counties on the island of Cape Breton. It has a population of about 17,000 in a land area of 3817 sq km (1474 sq miles). The county is known for its three main things. The first is its Scottish/Gaelic heritage, with some Acadian history in villages such as Cheticamp, and Irish influence. The second is its beautiful scenery of the Cape Breton highlands, often bordering the ocean with scenic cliffs, look offs, and drives. Finally, it has a strong musical scene and reputation of fiddling, Scottish, and Irish music and dancing. For these reasons, it was branded as “Canada’s musical coast”, with a logo to match.
