KENTVILLE, NS (Canada)
Design F1
Double battlements, triple blossoms
This design would have been C2, except that for the C2 I had chosen, I had 2 blossoms to balance the 2 battlements for priority of design rather than fully meaningful symbols of the 3 blossoms, each representing a people who had once predominantly lived in Kentville. On this matter, for the first time, I had to deal with the flag design philosophy of designing a flag for everyone rather than for each one, meaning duplicates of one current symbol to represent them all rather than a clutter of individual symbols. I definitely see the design value in this, though I’m not sure that goes well with Canadian multiculturalism where it is preferred to be seen and acknowledged, rather than the American melting pot where you are a fraction of one that includes you. On the other hand, this acknowledgement of individual peoples must be sincere rather than token or gratuitous. So while the Mi’kmaq and Acadians have been in Kentville in the past, I haven’t seen much mention of either in current content about Kentville, from mentions in their history to events, historic properties, and so on. Three blossoms might well be the way to go to sincerely acknowledge them while still maintaining a beautifully designed flag.
