Proposed Flag for Kentville, NS – Design A3

KENTVILLE, NS (Canada)
Design A3
Three Peoples’ symbols

From my thoughts in Design A2, this design replaces two of the three apple blossoms in that design with a Mi’kmaq star in gold on the left, and an Acadian gold star on the right. The apple blossom representing the mostly British descent population (or at least non-French) has to go in the centre as that is the primary spot on the flag, so there can’t be a chronological sequence of cultural symbols going either left to right or in reverse. However, the Mi’kmaq star for the First Nations people can go on the left as the “first” spot otherwise going left to right. That star is traditionally in red, black, white, and gold, but can also be shown monochromatically. It is done so here in gold to match the Acadian star that has to be gold to represent their patron saint of St. Mary. Fortunately, the gold Mi’kmaq star happens to represent the east, where the Mi’kmaq are located on the continent of many First Nations people.

REFERENCE
Kentville is the most populous town in the Annapolis Valley with a population of about 6600 in 2021. It is mostly known in the present for its annual Apple Blossom Festival in May, and was once known in the early 1800s as The Devil’s Half Acre for its rowdy drinking and horse racing that makes for some delightfully visual flag design ideas! They still use the name at times so it’s not taboo for flag design! Only the iconic Main Street Station with its castle like roof line remains of Kentville’s architectural history, with no designated historic properties in town. Otherwise, the town owes to its existence in originally crossing the Cornwallis River to connect the rest of the Valley with the rest of the Nova Scotia mainland. The Acadians were the first European settlers there before being expelled and replaced by the British.
