Personality Assessment Results

March 2016 Update

I have added a separate, but very detailed introversion / extraversion assessment from Scientific American magazine. This is the most confusing and misunderstood dimension of the four in the personality assessment below so you might want to try this Scientific American assessment to better understand yourself, and/or the concept of introversion / extraversion, itself, and possibly others with that better understanding.

The personality assessment which these documents interpret are now available as a free iOS app in the iTunes App Store!

Thank you very much to Shawn Seymour, a student at the University of Minnesota, Morris, who wrote the app for free and made it available for free! Please check out his other work on his site!

This page contains the results files for this site’s Free Personality Assessment based on the works of Jung, Myers, Briggs and Keirsey. Assessments were based on the personality typing work of Carl G. Jung, expanded on and popularized by Katherine C. Briggs, Isabel Briggs Myers and David Keirsey.

After you have completed the Excel file assessment, the Results tab in the file should look similar to the graphic below.

The PDF files in the following sections will give you a much more in-depth explanation of your results. Pending your familiarity with Jung personality typing and Keirsey Temperaments, I suggest you follow the steps in each section in the order presented to get the information in a complete and logical manner. You may do the same to learn more about another Temperament or personality type of interest to you.

Start by reading the Overview Document

This document will:

  • Go through your summary results to describe what all the terms and numbers mean;
  • Tell you how to interpret your results, and how not to interpret them;
  • Give you a background on Jung personality typing and Keirsey Temperaments; and
  • Summarize learning styles for your result by trait (letter) in each Preference (box), which will be very useful to know because we all learn through life

Identify and read your Temperament PDF

This section is optional, but I highly recommend it. It will give you a fuller understanding personality typing and their interactions, and will be referenced in your specific personality type PDF (next section).

Temperaments were created by David Keirsey. He created the original and current version of the Keirsey Temperament Sorter® on which the personality assessments on this site were based. There are four Temperaments in Keirsey’s system, each including four of the 16 possible Jung personality types. Your file will:

  • Talk about the three other personality types sharing your Temperament;
  • Describe how to deal with colleagues and bosses of each Temperament, in situations of stress, interviews and other aspects of the work place;
  • Explain tendencies of romantic and other types of relationships; and
  • Feature other insights you won’t find in your specific personality profile PDF (next section).

Click on your Temperament file below to download the file:

Profile of the Idealists Temperament PDF (NF letters in your results)

Profile of the Rationals Temperament PDF (NT letters in your results)

Profile of the Guardians Temperament PDF (SJ letters in your results)

Profile of the Artisans Temperament PDF (SP in your results)

Understanding your Personality Type

These files contain information specific to your Jung personality type to:

  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses, for work and relationships;
  • Point out famous people who have the same personality type;
  • Talk about your type as friends, parents and lovers; and
  • Identify what success generally means for your type and give you ten lifestyle rules to attain that success; and
  • Suggest other ideas for personal development.

Whatever you choose to take and reject from these files, it’ll certainly give you plenty to think about!

Click on the Jung personality type below which is yours, as indicated by the four letter code in your Results sheet, to download your personality type PDF file. The files are listed in alphabetical order of the four letter personality code.

  1. This application is simple & serves my purpose. I will be glad if i am notified next improved version on this. I am also willing to share relevant documents from my side.

      • Hi, I was wondering how can I reference your work?
I find the matter really helpful but cant seem to reference it in my papers 😦
Would be great help if you could help me there.

        • Hi, I’m not really sure if I can help you with your question, unfortunately. It’s something I created on my own, not through a journal or university program or such to have a formal reference, and it’s just on my site. Other than a link to it, I can tell you I learned from various Myers-Briggs resources that weren’t anything outstanding, but that the book Please Understand Me, by David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates, provided me with the instrumental ideas, approach, and some information with which I created my assessments that differentiated from the Myers-Briggs. I hope that helps you some. Please let me know if I can tell you more.

  2. This is very useful information in helping one to become self-aware and to work collaboratively with others. One comment: Those of us who are trained in the use of the MBTI use the word “Instrument” vs. Test. Reason being that there are no right or wrong answers (as in a test) and no good or bad types. This also is a way of avoiding locking ourselves into “box” in that we are the “Type”. We are so much greater than our type.

    • Thanks Kadi. What you say is debatable, though it is an excellent point.

Sure it is a test. A test doesn’t mean you have to fail it or pass it, or if there is a right or wrong answer. That’s a Judging perspective. 🙂

Tests can be to determine where you belong, maybe in a bell curve, maybe extent of progress, maybe in an array of possibilities or otherwise. That’s partly why I didn’t hesitate, and if you read the supporting content, I repeatedly hammer home the continuum interpretation rather than the boxes classification of results.

It is the common perspective that tests are for passing or failing, right or wrong answers, but so is the Myers-Briggs “test” being the common name it has. That’s why I chose the term to keep it “plain language”. “Instrument” instead of test is a only matter of political correctness if it’s not interpreted correctly, which I find a lot of people do.

Thanks for bringing up the matter to enlighten us all, Kadi. I’ll let the people choose which way they want to go when they talk about it.

  3. Thanks for offering such a cool resource. Everyone in my office took the test and they are very accurate and have been helpful for our introspection and team building.

    • That’s super, JA! The test is much more meaningful when groups of people who interact together take it to give it real life context rather than just one’s own life for context in interpreting the results. Glad to be of help in a small way but your colleagues’ willingness to try and make changes is the biggest kudos here by far. Way to go!

  4. This is great thank you so much! My hubby and I have had fun doing these together and comparing our results. I am going to get my colleagues at work to have a go as well and we can see what sort of team dynamics we have in play 🙂

    • You’re very welcome! I think this stuff is a lot of fun. People just have to be open to it. I hope it was helpful for your work. It’s one of the best places to try it for a group, as far as I’m concerned, because a lot is at stake there.

  5. Amazing! I work as HR executive with a creative agency (India) and was looking for MBTI result’s explanation but never thought will get it in such details! I am planning to implement it in my office which would be helpful in training purposes.

    Thanks a ton!

  6. Thanks a million for all of your work! The Myers-Briggs test is an area which stimulates my interest and your efforts are very much appreciated. (:

  7. Excellent stuff! I’m planning to use your tools with my students. Just one question: I have access to the “official” MBTI Form M Inventory (93 items) but not to the scoring sheet, which means I have no idea how to score it. Would you have any indication? I thought I could use your spreadsheet but you use fewer items. Since I’m doing all this in Portuguese (I’m from Rio) I’d rather stick to Form M (which has been translated already) and try to score it. In any case, congrats for the great site!!!

    • Hi Leonardo,

Thanks for the compliments. Unfortunately, I’m not able to help you with the Form M as I have never seen it and couldn’t even begin to guess at how to score it. It might be online is my guess but I couldn’t find how it’s scored on a brief quick search.

The tests I have here are quite good. Some of the other material out there are more academic than practical as few would be able to understand it all… as interesting as they may be. I intentionally tried to make what I posted as user friendly as possible so that unless someone is doing a university course just on Myers-Briggs, or psychology degree on it, what I have here should be far more than enough.

Good luck finding your Form M scoring. I’m sure it’s out there somewhere.

  8. Just had a more detailed look at the way of scoring. (yes an ISTJ)
There is a definate pattern in the scoring which could influence the results and validity.

All the answers A are E,S,T or J
    All the answers B are I, N, F or P

Maybe you could shuffle the answers in order to change the pattern.

    Cheers
    Klaas

    • I sure wish you hadn’t poined this out, as NOW the results can be skewed for some us… I consistently score as either an INFP or INFJ, depending on what day I take the test. On another site I was given a percentage of each, 82% and 81%, respectively…. Now the genie is out of the bottle 😉
      Julia

      • Hi Julia, I forgot to reply the patterns comment but have posted a reply just now. I wouldn’t worry about knowing the patterns as it’s not that exact… and won’t override people’s self-perceptions that may skew their answers far more than knowing any pattern would.

As for your INFP or INFJ, that just means you’re close to even on the P and J and rather dominant on the I, N and F. Close to even is what I’d prefer since you can be a chameleon of sorts, but if you want to do something needing a strong trait, you’re then at a bit of a loss. I love it that I’m an E/I split as well as a T/F split, but wouldn’t give up my ultra-dominant N for anything.

I added the tie-breakers in my version of the test so nobody comes out even on any trait, like you could on most other versions out there. Don’t know why there was that short-sightedness all this time since nobody is absolutely perfectly 50-50 in life.

    • If someone wants to cheat, they can. They don’t need to know the patterns to do that cause they’ll likely have a self-perception that is a stronger force than some patterns that still isn’t definitive cause which A belongs to which trait? Not likely they’ll want E, S, T and J, so it’s not completely definitive. If I were them, I’d worry about dealing with the truth some have trouble accepting about themselves, to get the right results, rather than some pattern they might know about in the tests.

  9. I have tried a variety of tests along these lines. Extraordinarily I came out as “Promoter” type on this test with an ideal partner type as “Protector” type. The first time a test has reflected my real life situation 😉 Either I’ve done too many of these and learned to cheat effectively or this test works. Still, I’ll recommend it anyway.

    Kind regards,
    Alex

  10. Good day! I am currently taking up my masters and I will be using the free Myers-Briggs test provided by your site. Is there a way you could send me the validity and reliability data of the test? My adviser wishes to see this first before pushing through with data collection. Thank you very much! God bless.

    • Hi Freddie, I collect no data from the tests itself. I only have website traffic information like I do with all the posts I have. For academic uses, I would recommend you use the real test the way they are, with data from tens of millions of people. You can contact the Myers & Briggs Foundation for that. I don’t know if they’d share or would want you to pay, but I can’t help you because I don’t have what you’re looking for. Sorry.

      • Just an FYI, the free test offered here is not the Myers-Briggs® assessment. John, if you’re doing research and want to use the Myers-Briggs instrument, you should contact the publisher, CPP: http://www.cpp.com. The test on this site in the Keirsey Temperament Sorter. If that’s the one you want to use, you’ll want to contact the Keirsey folks for info about it.

        • It is not as Emily stated and was stated that modifications had been made to the Keirseyan Temperament Sorter version of the test very similar in nature to Myers-Briggs. I’m working with Emily to make adjustments as will be requested by the Myers-Briggs people.

    • Hi, it might be the view type you have your spreadsheet default on. That’s my guess but I’d save your results, then bring the file to another machine, or get someone to look at it on your machine, to see if they can change the View you have, or if it’s something else. It is there!

  11. Really good work…! Simplified & extremely useful.
I wanted to seek your permission to use this test for my project. Are their any issues ( like copyright etc) .
I will be obliged with your cooperativeness.

    Thanks.

    • Hi Sumit. There are none I know of. I have cleared it with the Myers-Briggs people that this is not MBTI and they are OK with the content otherwise. Just don’t call it MBTI because it isn’t. However, if yours is an academic project, you would be best to use the real MBTI because you have acceptable results references to compare results to others who didn’t take the test from you. Using this would mean you could only compare it among those who took the test from you. Good luck!

  12. In the description of “Artisan” there is what appears to be an errant inclusion of the “Guardian” description:
“Artisans are excitable, trust their impulses, want to make a splash, seek stimulation, prize
freedom, and dream of mastering action skills. Guardians can have a lot of fun with their
friends, but they are quite serious about their duties and responsibilities. Guardians take
pride in being dependable and trustworthy; if there’s a job to be done, they can be counted
on to put their shoulder to the wheel. Guardians also believe in law and order, and sometimes worry that respect for authority, even a fundamental sense of right and wrong, is being lost.Perhaps this is why Guardians honor customs and traditions so strongly – they are familiar patterns that help bring stability to our modern, fast-paced world.”

    Thanks

  13. Thank you for producing what is a great fun tool although it has a serious side to it.

I’m going to use this with some of my colleagues if OK and apart from this I wondered if there is an ability to add a disc representation of the scoring, maybe in the form of a pie chart.

    Other than this great thanks.

    • Hi Jonathan. You’re more than welcome to use what is here with your colleagues. As far as adding a disc presentation to the scoring, I appreciate the value of visuals for those who are. However, I have lots to get to these days. You can always create something you like and just get people to put in their percentage scores. By deduction, Excel can create the remaining percentage, and then graph the two like 4 circles in a display. Maybe I’ll do it this summer, but not immediately. Great idea, though!

  14. Oh…it’s great. I love this assessment and I’ve tested it in a couple of my workshops about leadership and supervisory…say again it’s great! thank you so much!

  15. Dear Friend,
Its good to see your efforts and the application of MBTI, good work, excellent work for those who are looking for some learning in the learning stage and paves the way for further reading, Thanks for broadcasting, God bless,
    Sunil – Bangalore

  16. Ooops, I believe my first message didn’t go through. I’ll start over. Sorry for that.

Hi there and thanks a bunch for the great job! It is a serious test.

I have a question for you: is it possible to obtain a copy which is not password locked? I do not mean to sabotage or steal your work. The point is that I’d like to use your test to give to my three coworkers. The thing is they only speak French. For that matter, I’d like to produce a French translation.

As I said in my P.S. above, if you let me do that, I will let you use to translation for your website if you wish. And believe me, there are no good Jung test in French (at least none I could find).

    Thanks.

    • Hi, thanks for the offer. I’ll email you Sunday about it. Life’s a bit crazy right now getting ready to become a Klingon on Saturday and finding a cosplay for my guest at the costume ball.

    • Celine, can you leave a comment but use your email instead? You have your Facebook profile here as a link. Don’t put your email in the comment, just in the verification part. Thanks.

      • Digital Citizen,
I love your work and I have the same request that Celine mentioned. Is it possible to get an unprotected version. I am a professor at a small college in kentucky and would love you learn how you did the formulas. As mentioned by Celine, I have no reason to steal anything, I commend you on your work. I am just teaching statistics and using excel and I would love to learn and teach others how to similar projects.
        Thanks,
        Dr. Wesley wesleyphd@gmail.com

        • I’ll contact you directly later this weekend. There is a method to the madness, but no need to unprotect the sheets to figure out. Thank you for your interest.

  17. Dear Digital Citizen,

Found your site while searching google “I do not understand some keirsey questions”. 🙂
English is my first language but found some options had multiple meanings.
So i found the plain english test much more helpful e,g critical judgements vs value.

The one that really got me stuck is serious & determined vs easy going and sadly it is present in both the normal & plain english xls. could you or anyone shed some light on it? I think i’m easy-going (for most pursuits I’m laid back, except for those close to my heart/mind). However my fiance totally disagrees and says i’m serious and determined in my opinions of right/wrong, good/bad, treating all discussions as serious and i guess determined to prove my point. So simply, i take easy-going to refer to my pace of life while she takes it to mean the way i handle discussion, opinions. Which is the question asking for an answer to? – or perhaps another interpretation that we’ve missed.

The first time i did a keirsey test 1 month ago, i totally mishandled it. Much research has helped clarify and this website is much appreciated. I believe i should find out as much by myself first before considering to consult a professional.

    thanks from Singapore,
    Mark

    • Thanks, Mark. Aside from simplifying questions, the other reason I created the plain language version was stigma with words and/or situations in those questions which may skew how people answered.

      • any help with the “easy going vs serious & determined” question? if you could rephrase it or put into context, that would be really helpful 🙂

        • Easy going means you let things go easily. You don’t get upset much and can laugh when things don’t go right. You are calm in your efforts even when you want something badly. Serious & determined mean you get focus and intense when you do things. You generally aren’t happy when things don’t go well, maybe even get upset and probably don’t laugh about it. You might even contemplate trying harder, getting revenge, and don’t usually think it’s funny if others laugh about failure or things going wrong. Everybody is each some of the time, but which describes you in more cases? Does that help?

        • Oh, I thought you meant the results PDFs. I want to keep the file the way it is. You can create a new tab to list the same questions in another language, then tell people to put the answers in the original tab. Otherwise, if things get messed up with the file unlocked, there’d be no way of anyone knowing, and I don’t want the extra work to fix it. It’s not that much trouble to read the questions on one tab and put the answer in another tab. Try that.

  18. Hi there..this is a really good spreadsheet..especially for team building purposes…I was thinking of adopting what you have prepared for an upcoming team building as well..was wondering if u can share a version without the instruction to click on results tab? I am unable to edit the file… Don’t want my team to know results yet..that’s why do not want them to click on the results tab?

  19. I’ve used this information so oftent for team-building with my small group. To say that I’ve found it helpful would very much be an understatement. I’m going to be speaking at a small leadership forum that will have access to computers. I was wondering if I could have permission to use this information. The test has a copyright listed at the bottom and I do not want to infringe.
It is absolutely a fabulous test and it is greatly appreciated!

  20. Thanks for this great resource. The file date on the file I have shows it was created in January 2011. Is an updated version available? I love the work you’ve done.

    • Thanks, Bill! There is no update. The questions chosen had been well tested, and I don’t think times have changed enough that the reworded ones to remove stigmas are any more or less effective. Let me know if you have other questions.

      Minh

  21. Dear Minh,

Thank you so much for your wealth of knowledge and readiness to let us use it to help people grow and walk into their destiny. I am in South Africa and would love to translate this into Afrikaans. Is it possible to get a password so that I can do this.

    • Hello Craig,

My apologies to be declining your request but I would like to keep this file as it is. However, you could create a new worksheet, translate the questions with the question number, and have people do the test there. It would be a small inconvenience to then transfer the answers to the actual test worksheet for scoring their answers.

      Minh

  22. Dear Minh,
I would like to ask permission to use your work for my undergrad thesis.
I understand that it is not the official mbti and keirsey, and i would like to acknowledge you as the author.

    • Hi Jih, you can certainly use this for your undergrad thesis. Thanks for doing so. You should state all the qualifiers specifically, like you did here and like I did, that it’s not official mbti or keirsey, so that you avoid flack from those critiquing your thesis. Good luck! Let me know if you have questions. I’ll respond to your other comments now.

      Minh

  23. Hello Minh,
I am running a study pertaining to personality assessment within my school, and I would like permission to use this test as a part of my study. May I include this test on my website? Any guidance that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    Nick Lyon

    • Hi Nick, please go ahead and use this assessment. I would appreciate it if you could link it for them to get it from my site rather than uploading to yours, but that’s beyond my control. Thank you for asking for permission.

Otherwise, the only guidance I would give is if you tell the takers of the assessment to be as honest with themselves as possible, they’ll get a more accurate response. The assessment is only as good as the taker’s self-honesty. It’s not a lie detector test, lol

Finally, just keep in mind the dominant traits do not put them in a box, just that it means they are a certain way a majority of the time. There is some portion of them that is the opposite, just not the majority of the time, but not absent, either. Please ask if you have any other questions. Thank you.

      Minh

      • Sorry, Minh, but this “assessment” is nothing more than a parlor game, and not a very good one, at that. For you to even suggest that it is otherwise, is a fraud on anyone who takes it and relies on the results. The questions are unanswerable for the most part. At least 80% require an “it depends” response, which means that the questions are meaningless.

        • Do you have so many questions in life where the answers does not require an “it depends”? Are you so narrow minded to think that just because something doesn’t “depend” for you, that it’s the same for the other 7 billion people on the planet? Instructions do say pick an answer true the majority of the time. Please try to understand the complexity involved rather than dumbing it down and then commenting on it like it were so simple.

  24. Hello,
I would like to have more details about this assesment if possible. I am studying on a research that includes personality types. If you could reach me via e-mail I can send my questions privately.
Hope to hear from you 🙂
    Thank you

  25. This is a great tool, but I need to translate it to Spanish…would you please provide the unlock password?, I’ll be glad to forward back to you the Spanish version to share with the community

  26. Hi, Thanks for awesome file. How can we translate to our language . It’s a protected file and some of our students or team memebers couldn’t understand in english.

    Many Thanks

    • Hi Alis, I’m sorry but I had lost the password some years ago on a computer accident so I can’t even fix it now. I hear the Russians are good at hacking so maybe call up Putin to see if he can crack it for you? Really, sorry, though. If you can translate it, perhaps have a file with it, and just get them to enter A or B matching the question number after they do the test on paper. Beyond that, I am unable to help. Really sorry.

      Minh

  27. Hi Minh..

We are planning to use your great work during career counseling (as one of the options). Would there be any legal issues? Should I send an email to you to obtain your permission? Pls revert. thanks.

    • Hi, I was away on vacation without email access. My apologies for the delay in replying. There is no legal issues. Just please don’t call it the Myers-Briggs or anything equivalent to avoid brand confusion with the real thing. You would have legal problems with them if you did. If you called it as what I had called it, there would be no legal problem and you wouldn’t need permission, but thank you for asking.

      Minh

    • Some people will have pretty balanced scores but the nature of this version of the test should at least tell you where you have the slightest edge because there’s an odd # of questions for each trait, and one can’t score half points to have results come out equally.

  28. Hello Minh,

I want to make a few pages of your ebook for my book reference.

Can I commercialize it in my native language?

Please email me your answers if you have time. Your work is great, I like it very much.

    Thanks before. Best regards.
