Will More Athletes Get Expelled from 2012 London Olympics for Drugs or Tweets?

Seriously. There will be athletes caught by doping tests, but they don’t test every athlete like the world is following every tweet from every athlete. These “athtweets” are getting all kinds of athletes in trouble, but graver for some than others. Michel Morganella was recently sent home by the Swiss. Voula Papachristou of Greece was kicked off before the games even began, but should count because she had her spot secured. They aren’t the highest profile of athletes at the games, but lots is being made of their expulsion compared to the few cheats caught so far.

Unlike drugs, where people do know better but dope in hope of getting away with it, people probably think of tweets as an extension of their freedom of speech rights. Maybe, but not at the Olympics and in the public relations world! Mix the scrutiny of tweets and the wrecklessness with which they are done, what you’ve got is a potentially explosive mix that could get out of hand as easily as one wrong tweet.

We could really see more athletes get expelled from the 2012 London Olympics for tweets and drugs. More athletes being expelled for being tweeters than cheaters. I’m not yet ready to bet on that, but I could easily see the possibility coming!

Seems to me we need a tweeting oath as well as a cheating oath! I’ll give you one in easily less than 140 characters…

“I shall not tweet!”
